As a concept, for example, I like the idea of pulling the colours towards the green end of the spectrum, because that's what the Green Knight and his surroundings should look like. But is it well-executed? I'm not yet sure.

So I gave up a 22-episode buffer, put the comic on a short break and scrambled to come up with a new story.

It was there, it had some good stuff in it, it might make a good extra for a CD-ROM collection, or for paying donors (I was not getting paid for the daily strips at the time). In September 2002, at last, I pulled it out again and started revising it, placing it differently in the series' overall chronology.
Untangling the original from the revised version (which starts out simply reusing the art from the original story, and then progresses to ever more revised art and writing as the story develops) may be tricky for future comics scholars, especially because the original versions are unpublished. The sketchbooks in which I draw layouts for my pages would probably help them a lot. But my sketchbooks are also used for noting appointments, character sketches, layouts for other comics, to-do lists, phone numbers, email addresses, life drawings, random doodling and, lately, jotting down chord progressions and keys for various pieces of Irish traditional music. At this time, I was still looking for something to drive the plot while showing readers the land of elves and gnomes. It would have to be a simple thing, because I was much more interested in the characters and the setting. But just to be absolutely clear about it: the disappearance of Princess Phiallidh was not going to be it. I merely mentioned it as a bit of foreshadowing for a future storyline (which I still haven't done, but which is in the sketchbooks), and to keep the readers guessing about where the plot would go. When I looked at the old art for The Green Man's Belt, I noticed something that had bugged me before but was noticably more clear in this very old storyline than it is in my present material or even in such venerable works as The Stone of Contention: The line art lacked curves.
Considering the nature of the comic, then as now a humorous series with big-footed, big-nosed characters and a fair amount of shapely women showing cleavage, it's really astounding. I was drawing in a curvy style without using more than the faintest curves!
It's not so bad now but I still think a lot of my art could become stronger if I paid more attention to actually making curves bendy, so for this piece I am doing my best to exaggerate curves even in places where this could cause problems such as line tangents and anatomical faults. When used with discipline, it will help prevent such problems, but for now, I'm just trying to ram the importance of curves into my own thick skull. It was a partly-improvised, absurd Science Fiction comic inspired by Moebius' early Airtight Garage stories. Despite the crude artwork, X!Gloop had a spark to it that still makes it enjoyable to me, so I intend to resurrect this series soon, just to see if I can still write nonsense like that. The new version will of course have better art. I quickly settled on a routine of drawing most poses twice: once very quickly with the charcoal, to get the overall shape and test where I might have problems; then with a combination of the other tools, paying more attention to detail and shading. It sort of worked-I still suck at drawing from life but the average quality of observation improved a bit. I don't think I got the hang of using colored crayons yet though...

It's based loosely on the style of T.S. Sullivant although any attempt on my part at emulating that style was doomed from the get-go. The idea behind the drawing was to do something different from what I usually do, and different from other webcartoonists' wallpaper art. From time to time I find the style of Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan limiting, and it's on those occasions that I get ideas like "let's do a drawing in the style of Rembrandt" or whatever." title="This is a sketch for a wallpaper I've been working on.
