Not perfect, in this case - as with the previous pics, there are some faults that indicate a need to do some more life drawing, but rather nice. Just before it was time to run the story on The ROCR site, I decided to cancel it and do something else, because I was unhappy about the quality of the writing, and this unhappyness was also showing in the artwork for the last few installments that I'd drawn. So I gave up a 22-episode buffer, put the comic on a short break and scrambled to come up with a new story. But this abandoned story kept nagging at me. It was there, it had some good stuff in it, it might make a good extra for a CD-ROM collection, or for paying donors (I was not getting paid for the daily strips at the time). In September 2002, at last, I pulled it out again and started revising it, placing it differently in the series' overall chronology. Untangling the original from the revised version (which starts out simply reusing the art from the original story, and then progresses to ever more revised art and writing as the story develops) may be tricky for future comics scholars, especially because the original versions are unpublished. The sketchbooks in which I draw layouts for my pages would probably help them a lot. But my sketchbooks are also used for noting appointments, character sketches, layouts for other comics, to-do lists, phone numbers, email addresses, life drawings, random doodling and, lately, jotting down chord progressions and keys for various pieces of Irish traditional music. In other words, they're a scholar's nightmare. Here, I'll try to present, as best I can, the creative process that went into The Rite of Serfdom." title="The story that would become The Rite of Serfdom was started early in 2001 under the working title of The Ancestor's Bone, which I've since used as a chapter title for another Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan story. I don't actually sketch my pages on 1000-year-old parchment, by the way. Fortunately, I noticed in time, and canceled this page in favor of the next one. At this time, I was still looking for something to drive the plot while showing readers the land of elves and gnomes. It would have to be a simple thing, because I was much more interested in the characters and the setting. But just to be absolutely clear about it: the disappearance of Princess Phiallidh was not going to be it. I merely mentioned it as a bit of foreshadowing for a future storyline (which I still haven't done, but which is in the sketchbooks), and to keep the readers guessing about where the plot would go. Ideally, I don't want my readers to be certain about where the plot is going until it's well on its way. This is why I don't do hard-boiled detectives." title="Dialogue runs as follows: "So... what else is new in the homeland? Instead of her mother, Kel is going to see the shrinekeeper. I still think her mother would have been scarier, and I still think a confrontation with Kel's mother, a full-blooded faerie, would have made for a good story - but only if it was going to be a short one. It soon became clear that this wasn't going to be a short story, and this was one major reason for my eventual decision to shelve the story. It looks like I wasn't too clear at the time about which of the faeries was going to wear what. In these sketches, one of them was in full historical garb, the other was nude except for a tall hat similar to the one Kel is wearing. In the end, the one with the clothes also got the hat, which is in keeping with contemporary economical thinking." title="Another significant change in the dialogue. The faeries gibber at one another in runes, then thoughtlessly fly up until they realise that their guests can't fly. It doesn't advance the story much. If the comic had stil been daily as it was when I came up with this, that wouldn't have been much of a problem, and I would probably have run the page, but at three installments a week, i have to keep a slightly stricter watch on the pacing of the comic. It's interesting that I didn't draw in the facial expressions in the first panel. Instead of thimble-sized cups, they drink out of normal chalices. 2. The Rite of Serfdom is mentioned, but instead of refering to it as 'Cobbling', it's mentioned by the name I used in other storylines. Jodoque's response to this is removed. Instead of thimble-sized cups, they drink out of normal chalices. 2. The Rite of Serfdom is mentioned, but instead of refering to it as 'Cobbling', it's mentioned by the name I used in other storylines. This is considered a sacred activity though, and that makes some sort of sense. Keeping humans slightly in awe of faeries may well be important for the survival of faerie society; 1. Kangra explains that faeries can essentially quit the rite when they bloody well feel like it. Since writing the original version, I've reconsidered that aspect, and in "The Corby Tribe", I hinted that leaving the rite prematurely was considered a serious offense. So in this story, it's also a serious offense, and there's a complex set of rules surrounding it. While thinking about this, I came up with the idea of there being an "Office of Rites" and making these rules the driving force of the story. 2. Kangra gets to make the crappy "Huff" joke instead of Jodoque as in the revised version. In that version, Kangra gets to respond, making her look stronger and more serious than in the original." title="And on this page: We see the Rite refered to as a Border Elvish ritual aimed at spooking and confusing humans. Considering the nature of the comic, then as now a humorous series with big-footed, big-nosed characters and a fair amount of shapely women showing cleavage, it's really astounding. I was drawing in a curvy style without using more than the faintest curves! It's not so bad now but I still think a lot of my art could become stronger if I paid more attention to actually making curves bendy, so for this piece I am doing my best to exaggerate curves even in places where this could cause problems such as line tangents and anatomical faults. When used with discipline, it will help prevent such problems, but for now, I'm just trying to ram the importance of curves into my own thick skull. The Lives of X!Gloop were a series that I drew (if it deserves the name) between 1989 and 1994. It was a partly-improvised, absurd Science Fiction comic inspired by Moebius' early Airtight Garage stories. Despite the crude artwork, X!Gloop had a spark to it that still makes it enjoyable to me, so I intend to resurrect this series soon, just to see if I can still write nonsense like that. The new version will of course have better art. Enjoy these samples of the first series!
<img src="http://rocr.xepher.net/albums/xgloop/aac.thumb.png" width="114" height="150" border=0 vspace=2 hspace=0 align=top border="0" alt="X!Gloop page 1. I like drawing with graphite pencils - the charcoal-like texture they make makes me feel like a real artist, and the graphite worked well when it came to rendering the shading of those black garments, and the expressionistic effects I added to the drawings. What I don't like about graphite pencils is how they snap into little pieces when I drop them." title="One month after the previous session, I made this drawing, with a different model. This model was an oddly-built one that I had a hard time drawing. She was thin and bony but also loose-skinned. Only a handful of drawings are worth showing to people at all, and that only to comment on what I try to accomplish drawing a live model. The point of life drawing isn't just to get the anatomy right - it's to learn to perceive shape. Sometimes I do spontaneous charcoal sketches before settling down to do a more developed version in pencil. Not last night - I couldn't find my charcoals. So I drew the basic shapes of the figure in B pencil, and then went on developing the figure with a 4B. This is similar to how I cartoon except that instead of constructing the body from a shape in my head, I start from what I see but try to bring out the shape of that. You will see that I'm having a particularly hard time getting this right with heads - I don't think I've ever got the head right in any of my life drawing sessions, and I may need to do some studying from a book. You'd think that heads would be easier because you see them so much more in everyday life, but not so." title="From a life drawing session in November, 2004. It's based loosely on the style of T.S. Sullivant although any attempt on my part at emulating that style was doomed from the get-go. The idea behind the drawing was to do something different from what I usually do, and different from other webcartoonists' wallpaper art. From time to time I find the style of Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan limiting, and it's on those occasions that I get ideas like "let's do a drawing in the style of Rembrandt" or whatever." title="This is a sketch for a wallpaper I've been working on.
