Much as I dislike Little Green Footballs' comments policy, Brad DeLong shows that it's possible to err too far in the other direction.
C'mon Prof, let's not delete everything that offends you or might possibly provoke a quarrel. At least leave enough of the bad stuff in to allow us to follow the thread. Who are these trolls whose comments you replace by [troll]? Are they left-wing trolls who claim that Ward Churchill's old statements on the WTC bombings are just peachy? Are they right-wing trolls who want to tar every Democrat by association with this Churchill person? Are they apolitical trolls who just like to stir up shit? It's impossible to tell.
If you want to discourage trolls, disemvowelment is the way to go.
