Evolution and Gilbert and Sullivan

(To the tune of By the Mystic Regulation (here sequenced by Clifton Coles) from Gilbert and Sullivan's The Grand Duke

At the start of life's creation
'Twas the chemical relation
That allowed the duplication
Of the precursors of life
That began this vale of strife
(That began this vale of strife, this vale of strife)

And those that copied faster
For the others caused disaster
For the resources they'd master
And the others would lose out,
Then new mutants start their bout
(Then new mutants, then new mutants start their bout)

Event'wally arriving
At a class of life that's thriving
The bacteria surviving
With prokaryotic cell
They have done extremely well!
(They are doing, they are doing very well!)

Then prokaryotes were swarming
Phospholipid membranes forming
And the Cambrian were storming
With complex multi-celled life
And the body plans were rife!
(Yes, the Cambrian complex life
With new body plans was rife!)
(With new body plans, new body plans was rife!) /(But, but, but!)

At the start of life's creation
'Twas the chemical relation
That allowed the duplication
Of the precursors of life
That began this vale of strife

(Duplication of the precursors of life
Of life, of life, of life, the start of life, etc.)
